The Department of Sustainable Crop Production would like to experiment the impact of late winter pruning and of spatial variability in the vineyards on bud fertility
The project planned activities are the following:
In the Franciacorta district:
- perform three type of winter pruning during two years (winter pruning, late winter pruning when the buds are at two leaves phenological stage, very late winter pruning when the buds are at 6 leaves phenological stage)
- quantify the removed leaf surface taking into consideration three different canopy sections: apical, medium and basal
- register the evolution of the main physiological phases
- estimate total leaf surface at the end of the growth
- define the quantity and quality of the grapes
In the Oltrepò Pavese district:
- select a plot that is characterized by an important within filed variability of the vegeto-productive vine habitus
- realize a vigor map through remote sensing at high spatial resolution and plants identification
- define the quantity and quality of the grapes and the vegetative development of the vine
- for each vigor class, determinate the ripening curves
- analyze the physico-chemical properties of the soil
- assess the vine nutritional status through leaf diagnosis
- analyze the results to identify the vigor class that better fits with our oenological objective
- determine the potential bud fertility through transversal dissection and the number of inflorescences per bud based on its position on the cane in order to calculate the real fertility in the field
